🔼 Mr. Popular. Quarterback Chevan Cordeiro has been a popular name throughout the summer, he now sits on three preseason award watch lists. He was most recently named to the Walter Camp Award watch list, awarded to the most outstanding player in college football. The watch list will narrow to 10 semifinalists in November, before the award is announced in December.

🔼 Awesome Alum. Spartan graduate Marc J. Spears won the Curt Gowdy Award from the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. Marc is a Senior NBA Writer for ESPN’s Landscape, chair of the National Association of Black Journalists Sports Task Force, and an author. He spent time with the Spartan Daily while at San José State.
🔼 Welcome Party. Today, we’re welcoming the newest Spartan baseball assistant coach, Joshua Pike! He was a pitcher at NC State before his career was cut short due to injury. After his playing career, he jumped right into coaching at his school, starting as a student assistant which led to becoming the team’s assistant pitching coach. He helped lead the Wolfpack to two NCAA Tournament appearances and to the semifinals of the 2021 College World Series. This summer, he was a pitching coach in the Coastal Plain League. He has also worked with the USA Collegiate National Team’s bullpen staff.

Preseason Plays. We had some former Spartans making moves in the first weekend of the NFL preseason! Elijah Cooks had a nice 31-yard catch in the Jaguars game against the Cowboys. Linebacker Frank Ginda was signed by the Atlanta Falcons, he was named the USFL 2023 Defensive Player of the Year.
