🔼 Friday Night Fun. Welp, that was fun, huh Spartan fam?

Walker Eget completed 26-of-30 passes for 334 yards and three touchdowns, and Jalen Bainer snagged two interceptions to lead SJSU football squad to a dominant 35-28 victory over New Mexico in the Mountain West opener for both programs.

Wide receiver Danny Scudero led the way with 151 receiving yards on seven catches, including a career-best 70-yard touchdown strike in the second quarter, while Leland Smith added six receptions for 61 yards and a score.

On the ground, true freshman Steve Chavez-Soto paced the Spartans with 71 rushing yards and two touchdowns in his first career game, including a 10-yard score midway through the third quarter that extended the lead.

The Spartan defense forced three interceptions, highlighted by Bainer’s two picks and Larry Turner-Gooden’s takeaway in the first quarter.

🔼 Staying Hot. It had been seven years since the SJSU men’s soccer team had defeated Cal Baptist on the pitch.

That changed Saturday night when Angel Iniguez, Gilberto Rivera and Arnold Matshazi each found the back of the net to lead the Spartans to a thrilling 3-1 victory over the Lancers, who were receiving votes in the latest national polls.

Rivera opened the scoring in the 17th minute, juking a defender before slotting a left-footed finish into the lower corner. Ten minutes later, Iniguez doubled the lead himself with a brilliant strike from the edge of the box to make it 2–0 before halftime.

In the second half, the Spartans continued to press the attack. Matshazi sealed the win in the 78th minute, heading home a service from Iniguez for his team-leading seventh goal of the season.

Goalkeeper Edgar Guerra earned his eighth win of the year, making six saves in the full 90 minutes.

🔼 Weekend Work. The sixth-ranked SJSU men’s water polo squad had a busy weekend in the pool, picking up two victories over teams ranked in the top-11 nationally.

On Friday, the Spartans won an offensive outburst with #11 LMU, 16-13, behind three goals apiece from Mitchell Keightley and Samu Biros.

In Saturday’s two matches, Maro Tiozzo scored six combined goals to lead SJSU in a 9-8 win over #8 UC Davis and in a 13-12 loss over #16 UCSB.
