Spartan Brew 1/15: A Day To Honor

Celebrate MLK Day with the Spartans.

⚔️ The Official Newsletter For San José State Athletics

Good morning! “If you can’t fly then run, If you can’t run then walk, If you can’t walk then crawl, But whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.” - Martin Luther King, Jr.

Today, we pause to honor a man who moved our country and our society forward in so many ways. As we celebrate victories, moments and stories in each and every Brew, let us remember those who helped pave the paths before us.

This morning, we hope you enjoy this mini-sized Spartan Brew. We’ll be back with your Venti-sized edition on Tuesday.

What are we pouring into today’s Brew?

🔼 All The Buzz. Saturday brought another battle for the San José State men’s basketball team, but this one went the Spartans’ way. San José State took down Air Force thanks to a Myron Amey Jr. three-pointer at the buzzer! He led the Spartans with 16 points and nine rebounds. Alvaro Cardenas was itching for a double-double with 11 points and nine assists. The entire team came together to make clutch shots down the stretch and get the 70-67 win. The Spartans shot 62.1% from the field in the first half, their best first half percentage of the season.

🔼 Won The Dual. The Spartans’ gymnastics team won the dual meet at Sacramento State yesterday! Four Spartans won event titles and they finished the meet with a 194.950 score. Lauren Macpherson tied for first on beam and won the all-around with a season-best 39.175. She tied with Katherine Weyhmiller for the beam title with 9.900s. Jaudai Lopes won the vault with a season-high 9.875 score and Jada Mazury won the floor with the same score. Up next, they’ll travel to Boise State on Friday for a quad meet.

🔼 Top Of The Podium. The Spartans had a successful weekend at the Spokane Indoor Challenge! Demaris Waters won the 60m hurdles and Christopher Coats won the 400m dash for the men’s team. Jeremiah Walker took first-place in the 200m and Christopher Malone won the 800m. Pablo Villasenor took first in the weight throw. The women’s 4×400 relay team of Alyssa Bean, Sarah Mosteller, Savana Dutton, and Aliyah Williams took first-place. Alyssa also won the 400m dash and Sarah was close behind, coming in third.
