🔼 And We’re Off. San José State standout football players Gafa Faga, Peseti Lapuaho, Taniela Latu, and Quincy Likio have been named to the prestigious 2025 Polynesian College Football Player of the Year Award Watch List, as released today by the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame.
The award annually recognizes the most outstanding college football player of Polynesian ancestry who displays exceptional ability and integrity both on and off the field.
🔼 One Last Dance. Earlier this week, SJSU men’s soccer head coach Simon Tobin announced that 2025 will be his last as he is set to retire after this fall.
A native of London, England, Tobin has served as a collegiate men’s soccer head coach since 1987, starting his career at CSU Bakersfield before taking over at San José State in 2014. Over his 37-year career, Tobin has compiled an impressive 382-277-85 record, including a 75-97-33 mark with the Spartans.
Since 2017, Tobin has guided SJSU to the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tournament every season, making championship game appearances in 2017, 2018, 2022 and 2024.
🔼 Leading Lady. While her time as a Spartan may have finished this past spring, the accolades are still rolling in for SJSU women’s golf standout Lucia Lopez Ortega.
Lopez Ortega was recently selected as one of the two Mountain West nominees for the 2025 NCAA Woman of the Year Award.
Since its establishment in 1991, the NCAA Woman of the Year program has recognized excellence in academics, athletics, community service, and leadership in graduating female student-athletes.
The Mountain West Golfer of the Year and individual champion in 2025, Lopez Ortega closed her career with her fourth straight All-Mountain West selection. She helped San José State to five top-five finishes on the season, including at the MW tournament, where the Spartans fell in a playoff.
🔼 And We’re Off. The 2025-26 SJSU athletic calendar is officially underway as the Spartans women’s soccer team dropped a tough 3-0 road decision to #16 Santa Clara on Thursday evening.
Paige Fry had a career night for SJSU, recording seven saves, including saving a penalty in the 10th minute to keep the match scoreless early.
⏱️ COUNTDOWN TO KICKOFF: 1️⃣4️⃣ DAYS
